Hand Printed Photogravure, using home made walnut ink on Fabriano Rosaspina bianco paper, unframed.
 
Homemade walnut ink is used for this photopolymer print. Walnuts were brought to Britain by the Romans, the name in Old English meaning ‘foreign nut’, thus fitting for an image of globes. As we consider the history of generations of migration and the pressure on those forced to move.

This wunderkammer was in an antique shop discovered on holiday - I love globes and maps and how full they are of historical inaccuracies and tricks. For example a trap street is a fictitious entry in the form of a misrepresented street on a map - these were inserted into town maps to protect copyright so that you could tell if your map had been illicitly reproduced. And the political aspect of mapping: deliberate and ongoing.
 
The chosen raw material for the ink  means that the image is not only of the subject but from it, material and subject are united, both contemporary and historical, the work is an engagement with both human history and the natural world.
 
Each print is made individually by hand, resulting in subtle variations and a unique, tactile quality that distinguishes it from other printing methods.
